How to Tell If You Need New Brakes
Brakes rarely fail without warning — they get noisy, soft or shaky first. Here is what each symptom means, and the one that means stop driving today.
Start with what you can hear
Brakes are unusually good at telling you what is wrong, if you know what the noises mean.
A steady high squeal that is loudest when you are not braking and quietens as you press is almost always the wear indicator — a small metal tab engineered to touch the rotor once the pad material is low. Nothing is broken yet. Book an appointment in the next week or two.
A harsh grinding is a different message. That is usually the friction material gone and metal riding on metal. Stopping distances lengthen, and each mile carves the rotor deeper, so a pad job becomes pads and rotors. This one gets looked at now, not next month.
A single squeak on the first stop of a damp morning that clears after a few applications is usually just surface rust burning off overnight. Not a fault.
Then what you can feel
- A pulsing pedal or shimmying steering wheel under braking — rotors no longer running true, usually from heat and uneven pad deposits
- A pedal that sinks slowly toward the floor while you hold it at a light — often a master cylinder issue, and it needs immediate attention
- A soft or spongy pedal that needs more travel than it used to — air or moisture in the fluid, or a leak
- The car pulling to one side as you brake — commonly a sticking caliper on the opposite side
- A grabby pedal that bites much harder than expected — contaminated pads or a caliper problem
- Longer stopping distances than the car used to need — trust this one even without a noise
The one that means stop driving
If the pedal goes soft and keeps sinking, or the brake warning light comes on together with a change in how the pedal feels, treat it as a hydraulic failure. What you can see yourself
On many vehicles you can get a rough read through the wheel spokes without taking anything apart. The pad is the block pressed against the shiny rotor face — if the friction material looks thinner than about a quarter of an inch, it is getting toward replacement.
Also worth a look:
- Deep scoring or grooves in the rotor face rather than a smooth surface
- A pronounced lip around the outer edge of the rotor, which shows how much has worn away
- Heavy rust across the whole braking surface on a car that has sat for weeks
- Dark fluid weeping around the caliper or down the inside of the wheel
- Brake dust on one wheel dramatically heavier than its opposite number
Rear brakes on many vehicles are drums rather than discs and cannot be inspected this way, which is one reason a proper check involves pulling the wheels.
Why the mileage figure is not much use
People want a number, and the honest answer is that brake pads last between roughly 25,000 and 70,000 miles. That range is nearly useless as a planning tool because what drives it is not the pads, it is the driving.
Highway commuting is easy on brakes — you slow occasionally from speed and the pads stay cool. Town driving with constant stops, hilly routes, towing a trailer, or a heavy vehicle all wear pads far faster. Two identical Jeeps in Zanesville can be 30,000 miles apart on pad life purely because of where they are driven. Symptoms and a measured inspection beat any interval.
Do not forget the fluid
Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air over time, even sealed in the system. Water in the fluid lowers its boiling point, and unlike fluid, water vapour compresses. The result is a pedal that feels soft, and braking that fades on a long descent exactly when you want it most.
Most manufacturers call for a flush every two to three years regardless of mileage. It is inexpensive, it is easy to miss because nothing obviously breaks, and it is one of the clearest safety-for-money items on a maintenance schedule.
What a brake inspection covers
- Pad and shoe thickness measured at each corner, not eyeballed
- Rotor thickness checked against the minimum stamped on the rotor, and runout measured
- Calipers and slide pins checked for free movement — a seized pin wears one pad away while the other barely works
- Hoses and lines inspected for cracking, corrosion and weeping
- Fluid level and moisture content tested
- Parking brake operation and adjustment
- A road test, because some faults only show under real braking
If you are hearing something and want a straight answer about whether it can wait, that is a reasonable thing to bring in for. We would rather look at it early than replace rotors that a set of pads would have saved.
Common questions
- How long do brake pads last?
- Anywhere from 25,000 to 70,000 miles, and the spread is mostly about how you drive rather than the pads. Highway miles are gentle on brakes; stop-and-go traffic, hills and towing are not. Because the range is that wide, symptoms and measured thickness are far better guides than mileage.
- What does the squealing noise mean?
- Most pads have a small metal tab that contacts the rotor when the friction material gets low, and it is designed to squeal so you book an appointment. If it squeals steadily when you are not braking and quietens as you press the pedal, that is very likely the wear indicator doing its job.
- What about grinding?
- Grinding is different and more urgent. It usually means the friction material is gone and metal is contacting the rotor. Stopping distances get longer, and every mile driven grooves the rotor further, turning a pad replacement into pads plus rotors. Get it looked at right away.
- Why does my brake pedal pulse when I stop?
- A pulsing pedal or a steering wheel shimmying under braking usually points to rotors that are no longer running true — often from heat and uneven pad deposits rather than literal warping. Depending on thickness they can sometimes be machined flat again, otherwise they are replaced.
- Do I need to change brake fluid?
- Yes, and it gets forgotten. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and lets it compress slightly — a soft pedal, and reduced braking on a long descent. Most manufacturers specify a flush every two to three years regardless of mileage.
- Should I replace rotors every time I replace pads?
- Not automatically. It depends on their thickness against the minimum stamped on the rotor, and whether the surface is grooved or running true. Fitting new pads to worn or uneven rotors gives poor bite and noise, so if the rotors are past it they need doing — but a blanket rule of replacing both every time is not a technical requirement.
